Backpacking Equipment List

If you are in need of any of the equipment below, we recommend contacting the Elephants Perch (208) 726-3497, Backwoods Mountain Sports (208) 726-8818, or Sturtevants (208) 726-4501 - all located in downtown Ketchum.

AMGA certified and/or trained guides will be carrying a first aid kit, navigation equipment, inReach satellite device, repair kit, water purification kit and survival supplies. 

Sun Valley Guides PROVIDE:

  • Tents, sleeping bags, sleeping pads (for rent, or you can provide your own)

  • Cooking and eating utensils, stoves, fuel, cleaning supplies

WHAT YOU NEED:

  • 1-2 liters of water (hydration bladders work well)

  • Water treatment supplies (water filter/purifier or chemical treatment)

  • Backpacking-appropriate food for each meal for the duration of the trip, including snacks/bars and electrolyte drinks

  • Headlamp + spare batteries

  • Trekking poles (optional)

  • Packable, inflatable lantern (optional)

  • Tent footprint for extra ground insulation (optional)

  • Rain jacket

  • Insulated jacket or puffy coat

  • Warm mid-layer(s)

  • Quick drying pants/shorts (cotton, jeans, or sweatpants not recommended for daily wear)

  • Fleece pants or long underwear

  • Breathable t-shirt for warmer weather and/or a sun hoody (recommended for cool or cloudy days)

  • Lightweight gloves

  • Beanie or lightweight wool hat

  • Sneakers or light duty hiking boots (no sandals/flip flops)

  • 2-3 pairs of hiking socks (synthetic or wool)

  • Bandana or buff

  • Sun glasses, prescription eyewear, SPF-rated sunscreen, lip balm, bug spray, hand sanitizer and a hat

  • Toiletry kit (toothbrush, toothpaste, feminine hygiene products, personal medication, etc.)

  • Camp shoe (lightweight sandals or crocs)

  • Sleeping bag in compressive stuff sack (if you choose not to rent)

  • Day pack (~60 liters) that is big enough to carry all the above items, plus rain cover
